At SciDev, our core philosophy is simple: We achieve more together. Whether we are optimizing reservoir recovery or volunteering in our local neighborhoods, we believe that collaboration is the engine of progress. On March 24th, the SciDev team put this belief into action by partnering with the Houston’s Northwest Salvation Army Red Shield Youth Center for an afternoon of high-energy STEM education.

Bridging the Gap: Classroom to Field

Technical concepts like porosity and fluid dynamics are the bread and butter of our daily energy services operations, but they can feel worlds away to a student in a classroom. Our goal for this outreach was to bridge that gap.

Using the globally recognized Energy4me curriculum, our team led a group of bright young students through the lifecycle of energy. We didn’t just talk about engineering—we rolled up our sleeves and showed them how it works.

The Three Stations of Discovery

To give the students a holistic view of the energy industry, we designed three interactive stations that mirrored real-world challenges:

1. Understanding Density: Using simple fluids, students visualized how oil, water, and gas separate and layer within a reservoir based on their density.
2. Core Sampling: Students explored what’s beneath the earth’s surface with a fun exercise using a straw to withdraw core sample in various types of sands and soils.
3. Getting the Oil Out: Students simulated the mechanics of extraction. We explained how SciDev’s precision chemistry helps “move” resources through rock layers more effectively, reducing waste and increasing efficiency.
