It’s not just technology that drives SciDev forward; we believe our greatest strength lies in our people. This month, we’re proud to recognize Glenn Beisert, our Technical Service Supervisor in Houston, Texas, as our SciDev Innovator! With over three years at SciDev, Glenn brings a wealth of experience and a passion for innovation to his work. We sat down with him to discuss his journey in oilfield chemistry, his work on groundbreaking projects, and his take on the future of the energy sector.
From the Navy to Technical Innovation
Glenn’s career is a testament to his adaptability and drive. After retiring from the United States Navy in 2007, he transitioned to the oil and gas industry, starting as a mud engineer before moving into technical services. His career led him through roles at MI-SWACO and QMAX before he found his home at SciDev in the Chemical Services Team.
“I’m proud to say I’ve been with SciDev for over three years now,” Glenn shared. “My career has evolved as I’ve gained a ton of experience in R&D. I’m not afraid of trying new things and testing the envelope of any endeavor, and I am not afraid of failure. There really is not such a thing as failure because each test, whether successful or not, gives us valuable data that we can use to improve our technology.”
Developing a Better Wheel
When asked about a project he’s particularly proud of, Glenn immediately pointed to CatChekTM. Leading his team, he helped improve an already successful product, resulting in the development of three new products: EnFlow 410, EnFlow 430, and EnFlow 450. This is a prime example of how Glenn is driving innovation in oilfield chemical services.
“We wanted to make a better wheel,” Glenn said. “Our newest product, EnFlow 450, was designed to combat iron contamination, which can really stress a fracturing fluid and downgrade its performance. In tests, it prevents the ‘gummy bear’ effect in waters with iron, allowing for 100% fracturing fluid performance, higher oil production, and emulsion stability.”
The Role of R&D
Glenn’s approach to innovation is pragmatic and forward-thinking. He believes in the power of communication, collaboration and learning from every test.
“R&D is 99% failure, but that 1% is what we’re looking for,” he explained. “After numerous tests and reformulations, a product performs exactly the way we want it to. Our leadership gives us the freedom to test and try several options and reach a products full potential”
Glenn and his team us past data to improve existing solutions instead of reinventing the wheel, driving continuous innovation and practical results.
Advice for Aspiring Engineers
Glenn has some valuable advice for young engineers entering the energy sector:
Be a good money manager: “The industry has its ups and downs, spend wisely and save for the downturns.”
Don’t be afraid to ask questions: “Don’t be intimidated because you’re not the smartest person in the room. Listen, learn, and ask questions.”
Outside of work, Glenn enjoys spending time with his eight grandchildren and loves the outdoors, including golfing and hunting. He looks forward to continuing his career at SciDev, helping to address the industry’s most complex water problems with innovative, cost-effective solutions.
