Aaron Kavanagh, who joined SciDev in 2018, exemplifies the journey from a purely technical background to a leadership position in a cutting-edge company. With his roots in controls and automation, Aaron has embraced the challenges and rewards of transitioning into new role in Europe. Fostering a Culture of Innovation
Innovation is at the heart of SciDev’s success, and Aaron plays a key role in nurturing this culture within his team. His approach involves encouraging team members to think creatively and challenge conventional methods. “I always stress the importance of exploring new ideas rather than just following established practices. This mindset helps drive progress and brings fresh perspectives to our projects,” Aaron explains.
“SciDev’s PFAS Treatment Technologies is a testament to the companies’ culture of innovation. We are certainly ahead of the curve in treating PFAS, that’s exciting, and we want to stay there.”
The Joy of Diversity at SciDev
What stands out most for Aaron at SciDev is the diversity within his role and the proactive nature of his team. “I appreciate the way our team members are willing to get their hands dirty and tackle issues head-on,” he says. This readiness is crucial in a field where problems can arise unexpectedly.
Aaron’s role as Engineering Manager at SciDev was anything but monotonous. His daily activities span a broad spectrum of engineering disciplines, including design, electrical, process, and mechanical engineering. This variety is one of the most fulfilling aspects of his job. “Over the past two years, my tasks have ranged from intricate engineering design to hands-on problem-solving across different fields. The diversity of responsibilities keeps me engaged and constantly learning,” he shares.
Leaving a Legacy
Aaron has been involved in several noteworthy projects during his tenure at SciDev. One standout project was a complex wastewater treatment job in Queensland. This project involved treating PFAS impacted leachate from live landfill cells. “This was one of the most challenging water sets we faced over my tenure in Australia. It involved applying multiple water treatment technologies to a process where the water quality characteristics were constantly changing / evolving. The successful outcome of this project is a true testament to the creative minds within the SciDev family and clear proof of people going the extra mile when our backs are against the wall.”
Another significant achievement was developing a water quality monitoring system for a major mining company in Western Australia. The technology has reduced operational costs and safety risks as well as ensured the client was able to address all water quality compliance requirements quickly and efficiently. Despite the challenges posed by COVID-19, the team delivered a multi-million-dollar project, marking a major milestone for SciDev. The technology is now being rolled out on other projects and that is a legacy project for Aaron.
Looking Ahead: A New Chapter in Europe
As Aaron looks to the future, he’s gearing up for an exciting new phase in his career. He is transitioning back to Europe, where he will collaborate closely with John Wilson, SciDev’s Vice-President Water Technologies for Europe. “The lessons and experiences I’ve gained here in Australia will be invaluable as I start this new chapter in Europe,” he reflects. Aaron is eager to apply the knowledge he has amassed over his career and is enthusiastic about the opportunities that lie ahead. “Australia is ahead of the curve in PFAS legislation and treatment. I’m looking forward to helping John introduce SciDev’s expertise and leading- technology like FlourofIX™ and RegenIX™ in the European market. The future for SciDev is looking very bright.”
